History buffs should make sure to visit Ronda, the birthplace of modern bullfighting. Set in a cut in the mountains, this historic town has been contested by bandits, guerrilla bands and armies. Both Ernest Hemmingway and Orson Welles loved the town, and Welles' ashes are buried there.
Almeria is another stunning historic town, overlooked by a magnificent Arabian fortress. You can visit the cathedral, built as a place of worship, and defence in uneasy times. The ancient theatre still performs copla, dance, opera, zarzuela, traviata and plays.
La Bella Vista is home to a national monument situated near the entrance. ‘The Tower of the Duchess’ was built in the 15th Century. It was originally built to guard against raiding pirates. It has been carefully and faithfully restored during construction of La Bella Vista.
